January 1970: MOTOWN GOES COUNTRY, HARVEY FUQUA JOINS COMPANY
Motown's first buyouts occur in 1963. First they acquire Al Klein's Duchess label, in Nashville. Some Duchess product is re-issued on Motown, and Klein is allocated the Mel-O-Dy label, which becomes the company's first country imprint. Then Harvey Fuqua brings his Tri-Phi group of labels into the company, along with artists Junior Walker, Shorty Long and the Spinners.
